Ethiopia's highland capital, home of Lucy and the birthplace of coffee culture.
Addis Ababa sits high in the Ethiopian highlands at about 2,300 metres, which keeps it mild all year. The National Museum of Ethiopia holds the bones of Lucy, a human ancestor more than three million years old, and Holy Trinity Cathedral is a landmark of the Ethiopian Orthodox church.
Merkato is one of Africa's largest open air markets, and a traditional coffee ceremony is a must. The city is the hub for Ethiopia's historic north, including the rock churches of Lalibela and the castles of Gondar.
The dry season from October to February is the best time to visit.
