Malaga is the capital of the Costa del Sol and often the start of a beach holiday along the coast, but it is well worth time of its own. Pablo Picasso was born here in 1881, and the Picasso Museum sits in the old town near the cathedral.

Above the centre, the Moorish Alcazaba fortress and Gibralfaro castle look out over the port and the city beaches. Resorts such as Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Marbella and Nerja are within easy reach.

Winters are mild, so Malaga suits a break at almost any time of year.
